Ralph Wanger explains the principles of investing in small, rapidly growing companies whose stocks represent good value. Anyone who invested $10,000 in his Acorn Fund at its inception in 1970 would have $618,000 at the end of 1996. But whether you are investing in mutual funds or buying individual stocks on your own - or doing both - A Zebra in Lion Country offers an investment philosophy that will carry you through the rough spells and bring you greater wealth over the long term. Famed for his witty, insightful reports to shareholders, Wanger displays his irreverent savvy in this guide to locating small company "value" stocks that will yield well-above-average returns. As the title suggests, investors are like zebras in lion country: They must settle for half-eaten grass in the middle of the herd, or seek fresh grass at the outer edge, where hungry lions lurk. Wanger shows every investor how to achieve the right balance of safety and risk, and imagination and discipline, to survive and prosper in the investment jungle. Destined to become a classic in the field of investing, A Zebra in Lion Country is as entertaining as it is instructive.

SECURITY ANALYSIS

This is the long-awaited reprint of Graham and Dodd's masterful first revision. The first edition of "Security Analysis", published in 1934, forever changed the theory and practice of successful investing. Yet the remainder of that tumultuous decade brought unprecedented upheaval to the financial world, compelling Benjamin Graham and David Dodd to produce a comprehensively revised second edition. It is that edition, out of print for decades, that you now hold in your hands. "Security Analysis, Second Edition", published in 1940, is considered by many (including legendary Graham student Warren Buffett) to be vastly superior to the first. Yet after three subsequent editions and over six decades, the insightful and instructive second edition could be found only in rare bookshops and closely-guarded private collections.McGraw-Hill, the book's original publisher, is honored to publish "Security Analysis: The Classic 1940 Edition". Identical in every meaningful aspect to the classic original, this is the long-awaited book that set the tone for decades of value investors. Let it provide you with a greater understanding of this country's financial heritage, along with timeless value investing insights that have proven relevant and profitable in all types of markets and financial environments - and will never go out of style.'The lapse of six years since first publication of this work supplies the excuse, if not the necessity, for the present comprehensive revision ...We have revised our text with a number of objectives in view. There are weaknesses to be corrected and some new judgments to be substituted' - From the Preface. The names Graham and Dodd have come to be inextricably linked in the minds of thoughtful, disciplined investors. Their 1934 book "Security Analysis" made the two synonymous with intelligent, long-term investing, and forever changed the face of Wall Street. While post-Crash traders and investors treasured the book for its rigorous honesty, determined logic, and unequalled track record of success, the authors saw only the 'weaknesses to be corrected'. The second edition of "Security Analysis", published in 1940, allowed Ben Graham and David Dodd to set the record straight. It was considered by many then, and is considered by many now - including Graham student and disciple Warren Buffett, to be superior in many ways to the first. Still, as subsequent revised editions appeared, the once - indispensable second edition fell out of print and became virtually impossible to locate. With "Security Analysis: The Classic 1940 Edition", McGraw-Hill returns this long-sought investment classic to the marketplace. While its timeless advice - that investors should ignore social trends, company prospects, and management styles to focus on the balance sheet - is as vital today as it was in 1940, it is the book's updated insights and observations that justify its importance in the annals of both investing and publishing.Even as the financial world sang the praises of 1934's groundbreaking "Security Analysis", Benjamin Graham and David Dodd knew they could improve it. And that they did, with the 1940 publication of a brilliant second edition. Now, after having been unavailable for decades, this influential book returns in "Security Analysis: The Classic 1940 Edition". As powerful today as it was for investors six decades back, it will reacquaint you with the foundations of value investing - more relevant than ever in tumultuous 21st century markets - and allow you to own the only book that could rightfully claim to have improved upon the eloquent first edition of "Security Analysis".

Before the advent of writing and books, human knowledge was memorized and transmitted down the generations by storytellers; but when this skill wasn’t necessary it declined. Similarly, in our time with the ubiquity of computers and hand calculators, the ability to carry out mental calculations has largely disappeared. Yet a person who knows just grammar school arithmetic can learn to do mental calculations comfortably and habitually. This skill, especially to make rapid approximate calculations, remains valuable, particularly for assessing the quantitative statements that one continually encounters. For instance, listening to the business news on the way to my office one morning, I heard the reporter say, “The Dow Jones Industrial Average [DJIA] is down 9 points to 11,075 on fears of a further interest rate rise to quell an overheated economy.” I mentally estimated a typical (one standard deviation ) DJIA change from the previous close, by an hour after the open, at about 0.6 percent or about sixty-six points. The probability of the reported move of “at least” nine points, or less than a seventh of this, was about 90 percent, so the market action was, contrary to the report, very quiet and hardly indicative of any fearful response to the news. There was nothing to worry about. Simple math allowed me to separate hype from reality.

In their groundbreaking book,  Women Don’t Ask ,  Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever uncovered a startling fact: even women who negotiate brilliantly on behalf of others often falter when it comes to asking for themselves. Now they’ve developed the action plan that women all over the country requested—a guide to negotiation that starts  before  you get to the bargaining table. Ask for It   explains why it’s essential to ask   (men do it all the time) and teaches you how to ask effectively, in ways that feel comfortable to you as a woman. Whether you currently avoid negotiating like the plague or consider yourself hard-charging and fearless, Babcock and Laschever’s compelling stories of real women will help you recognize how much  more  you deserve whether it’s a raise, that overdue promotion, an exciting new assignment, or even extra help around the house. Their four-phase program, backed by years of research, will show you how to identify what you’re really worth, maximize your bargaining power, develop the best strategy for your situation, and manage the reactions and emotions that may arise—on both sides. Guided step-by-step, you’ll learn how to draw on the special strengths you bring to the negotiating table to reach agreements that benefit everyone involved. This collaborative, problem-solving approach will propel you to new places both professionally and personally—and open doors you thought were closed. Because if you never hear no, you’re not asking enough.

The solution to all this risk and uncertainty, says world-renowned trading systems expert Perry Kaufman, is to take market positions that are not exposed to directional risk. Trading a spread or market neutral position takes price shocks out of the picture completely. In Alpha Trading, Kaufman shows how to make trading profits even when there are no market trends and price shocks rock the markets every day. His strategies, long shown to be profitable, are called statistical arbitrage, or stat-arb, and they can be traded by holding positions for a few days, as he suggests, or for milliseconds as implemented by the big investment houses. They include all forms of stat-arb trading, from spreads to yield-curve trading to program trading, and from the simplest pairs trade to large-scale market neutral strategies. Kaufman covers each one in detail, ultimately showing you how to change the shape of your risk and drastically increase your probability of profiting under any market conditions. With his decades of experience in almost every type of market, Kaufman's guidance, strategies, and lessons will be a welcome addition to the trading literature for professional and serious individual traders for years to come. A companion website includes spreadsheets to perform the calculations found in the book, including those for pairs trading, risk-adjusted spreads, cross-market trading, traditional market neutral trading, and other stat-arb methods. Alpha Trading will help serious investors and traders make money when markets make no sense. With tested strategies and systems for profitably trading in directionless markets, Kaufman shows traders how to exploit new highs and lows, hedge primary risk components, find robustness, craft a diversification program, and much more, complete with spreadsheets to do the calculations. Each step of the process is explained and illustrated with examples of how the numbers should look.

Cinema is a medium of light. And during Weimar Germany's advance to technological modernity, light - particularly the representational possibilities of electrical light - became the link between the cinema screen and the rapid changes that were transforming German life.In Frances Guerin's compelling history of German silent cinema of the 1920s, the innovative use of light is the pivot around which a new conception of a national cinema, and a national culture emerges. Guerin depicts a nocturnal Germany suffused with light - electric billboards, storefronts, police searchlights - and shows how this element of the mise-en-scene came to reflect both the opportunities and the anxieties surrounding modernity and democracy. Guerin's interpretations center on use of light in films such as Schatten (1923), Variete (1925), Metropolis (1926), and Der Golem (1920). In these films we see how light is the substance of image composition, the structuring device of the narrative, and the central thematic concern. This history relieves German films of the responsibility to explain the political and ideological instability of the period, an instability said to be the uncertain foundation of Nazism. In unlocking this dubious link, A Culture of Light redefines the field of German film scholarship.

At a time when everyone seems to think that lawyers, engineers and accountants are the people who will make it in life, this book busts that myth in an entertaining way. The author says in the book A Whole New Mind that we lived in an era of left-brain dominance. This era spawned the Information Age and gave rise a whole new set of people. The new era, he claims, will belong to the people with right-brain dominance. Right brain dominance gives people an all new set of character traits like inventiveness and empathy. The author uses this as the principal argument while explaining to us the contours of our world. In the book, the author lists various ways of improving your right brain that will help us survive in the Western world. According to Daniel Pink, there are six key points that are decisive in building your right brain: story, empathy, design, sympathy, play and meaning. In order to drive his point home, he compares this period to past periods of intense churn and change like the Industrial Revolution and the Renaissance.
